The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The ex-president was sentenced of plotting a government overthrow in last fall and handed more than over two decades in jail, but he continued under house arrest pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after "new facts" were revealed.

This encompassed attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the detention, the judge said data from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the former leader's plan to remove the tracking monitor to ensure success in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his child.

His son, Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a meeting of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or see it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I invite you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so backers could "pray for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the potential of his "relocation to embassies near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a background of arranging to ask for protection through a embassy office", a statement said.

The legal document underscores that the US embassy in the national capital, Brasilia, is located around 13km from the former president's residence.

Worldwide Consequences

His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist American leader Trump, leading him to implement a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.

He is being held in a Federal Police station in the capital and will experience a custody hearing on the next day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under house arrest, with tracking devices.

They also requested that he be authorized to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he required ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

He was determined responsible of heading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the presidential race to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a plot which encompassed plans to assassinate the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was stopped because it failed to get the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. The current president was sworn in without incident on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, thousands of his backers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The security forces stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The justices found that the demonstrators had been incited by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.

The one-time head of state called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him running in the next presidential race.
