Patients Stopping Slimming Jabs Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing such treatments should be aware of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a return to starting mass in about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers point out that people who lose weight through dieting typically experience a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the injections explains the heightened weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have come off the medication report a intense return of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly starving," described one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Widespread Use

Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is higher among women than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians stress that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits relies on combined lifestyle changes.
