This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a dare for partners in committed relationships who are fans of scary movies: Get comfortable with your loved one and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit has now made its streaming debut on Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like typical body horror, but beneath Together lies a intense meditation about how we choose to love each other.

An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for over ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a special spark to their roles, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The story begins when the couple relocate from the urban environment to the country for Millie’s job. A commonly used narrative setup, of course, but that’s mostly where the cliches conclude. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the protagonists discover an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a strange force begins influencing the couple. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The entire film is a methodically building horror experience, interspersing elements of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts neatly and delivers them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and distant from his support system. He is terrified of the idea of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is amplified by the fact he can’t drive and relies on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together avoids making one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie confront the kind of problems that arise in most partnerships over a long period. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor never feels clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for staying single. Conversely, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could act as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply turn to your partner and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can experience at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu now.
